BNJMN Biography
December 2011
Cutting a stark contrast to his contemporary counterparts, the lone electronic visionary BNJMN emerges from a secluded coastal breeding ground in the South of England, whipping up a storm in his wake with his unabashed disregard for classicist rules by deftly carving his own hybrid sound of house, techno and dubstep.
Dubbed ‘future sound’, underpinned by guttural basslines with courteous nods to Detroit and 90s IDM, BNJMN’s sonic discourse mysteriously defies genre pigeonholing. Setting out to create aural environments, imbued with the influences of Aphex Twin, Theo Parrish and Efdemin, the vast soundscapes plunge the listener into the dreamy and haunting domain of woozy arpeggios and jarring elements where BNJMN presides.
To say that 2011 has been the prodigy-hailed Bournemouth producer’s year would be something of an understatement. In putting out two full-length artist albums within the span of only a few months – ‘Plastic World’ in April followed by his sophomore LP ‘Black Square’ in October – both on the lauded Amsterdam imprint Rush Hour, he has attracted appraisal across the board from some of the most revered voices in the electronic music industry. Industry leaders Resident Advisor, Pitchfork and Fact all picked him out and XLR8R named him in their 20 ‘Best New Artists of 2011’, alongside luminaries like Nicolas Jaar and Boddika.
Now taking his live show on the road, 2011 tour highlights included the ‘7 Jahre Berghain Nacht’ at Panorama Bar, Sudpol in Lucerne, Copenhagen’s Dunkel, as well as London shows with Rush Hour and Phonica – all the while wooing some of the most discerning crowds in the world.
BNJMN looks towards the new year with a CD version of ‘Black Square’ seeing the light of day, along with a slew of remixes and plans of launching his own imprint. Not confined by pressures from a fickle current electronic climate adhering to trends, the timelessness of BNJMN’s sound makes him stand out as one of the most promising stars of 2012.
