Biography July 2013
Although Clayton Steele is relatively new to the scene, his love for electronic music began as a teenager in the early 90s. Growing up in London, Ontario - located between Detroit and Toronto - was ideal for moulding his musical taste and he quickly became known for his distinct and flawless sets, after picking up the DJ habit at age 17. His local record store ‘Doctor Disc’ was well stocked with the sounds coming out of Detroit music and young Clayton became hooked.
He would spend his weekends partying between the hot spots of Toronto and Detroit, soaking up the styles of acts like Richie Hawtin, John Acquaviva, Kevin Saunderson, Juan Atkins and Carl Craig. Having such a rich exposure to this style of music has definitely shaped Clayton's unique style which can be described as progressive-techno with an 80’s tinge, topped off with the occasional sultry new-wave vocal.
However it was a move to the States, in 2006, which would provide the catalyst for moving forward. First settling in Las Vegas, Clayton found himself surrounded by desert and mountains. With time on his hands he decided to invest in a home studio, to bring his dream of making music into fruition.
In 2008 Clayton made the move to Miami and began hosting, producing and writing for Ultra Music Festival’s radio show which was aired on Sirius XM. After a couple of years Clayton decided it was time to get back into what he does best, creating his own music and in 2011 he released ‘I Can’t Go Back’ on the My Favorite Robot label. In 2012 Clayton went on to release ‘Distorted Point of View’ which was signed by Jonny White of Art Department and was released via No.19.
Clayton has had the opportunity to work with some great labels and fellow Canadians including No.19 and My Favourite Robot. In March 2013 his EP ‘Passion / Sleepwalker’ was released via No.19 featuring the remix of ‘Passion’ by DJ T which quickly became one of No.19’s top selling tracks on Beatport.
Clayton Steele now finds himself focusing on perfecting his live performance complete with vocals. He has multiple tracks set to be released throughout the year, as well as a vocal coming out on the My Favorite Robot album due out later this year on No.19.
